Since the day our fore-fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, these United States of America have been known as “the land of the free”. It is the country with opportunity, tolerance, and most importantly freedom. America was and still is the home to many different races, religions, and ethnicities. However, America had to fight for all that it has become today. Even before it became a nation in 1776, people have flocked into America in search of freedom. America was, and still is, accepting all people into immigration ports such as Ellis Island, headquarters of American immigration. Although the immigrants are what helped shaped this countries history, Ellis Island on its own is a historical landmark.
From 1892 to 1954, over twelve million immigrants entered the United States through the port of Ellis Island. It is located on a small island in the New York Harbor. Throughout its years, this piece of land has been enlarged from its original 3.3 acres to a large 27.5 acres. The island served many purposes throughout its history and has helped America in various ways.
